Alain Laferrière

Alain Laferrière, Artisan

Born in the Montérégie region next to the Richelieu River, I was always creative, drawing, painting, sculpting.  I studied art at the Cégep of St-Jean-Sur -Richelieu and pursued with interior design.

I worked as an interior designer for 18 years in St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu at first, then in Gaspésie where I specialized in architectural heritage.  I was always concerned with the environment.  For many years, I was planting dozens of trees yearly.

For the last 12 years, with l’Atelier Saint-Cerf, I pursue this environmental mission by sharing my passion for the wood and the preservation of the natural habitat.  I chose a simple mode of life where I recycle, I exchange, I fix, I am vegetarian and I eat local biological food.  I chose an ecological way of life.

My values are related to my small enterprise; this is why I use only recycled or local wood (leftover from local wood shops as an example), recycled or recyclable wrapping, ecological and natural finishes on my products such as linen oil and non-toxic stains.

My work evolved with time.  I always favored simple and pure lines while keeping an old-style look which gives my work an ancient style.  I am attracted by the mythical which explain the name Atelier Saint-Cerf.  A little bit like the story of Hubert the hunter or in the Hayao Miyazaki (The Mononoke princess).  The image of the Tall White Deer protecting the forest is the reason why my atelier exists.
